Where's the best place to sell your silver?

Maybe you have some old silver coins or silver jewellery that you no longer want, where is the best place to sell it? Well there are a variety of places you can sell silver but first it's perhaps important to get an idea of its value before any money changes hands.

If you’re selling silver coins the obvious first place to try is a coin dealer. For some coins the value is equivalent to its weight or scrap value whereas other coins may have a premium if they are collectable. The condition of the coin will play a part here in determining its value. A coin dealer will quite happily provide you with a valuation but make sure they are a registered dealer. In the UK, dealers are registered with The British Association of Numismatic Societies (www.numis.co.uk)
If you’re selling jewellery then you could try a few different independent jewellers for a valuation but be aware prices might vary depending on who you ask. Antique dealers may also be interested if the jeweller is slightly older.

Selling your silver to a scrap dealer:
Selling silver to a scrap dealer has several advantages. Firstly, the scrap dealer will pay a fair market value for the silver regardless of the condition. Market value is known as the melt weight, which is the current market price of silver. With a price solely based on weight, sellers can be assured of a guaranteed price. There are many scrap silver dealers available on the internet but compare the different sites before you make a choice. Also make sure the company insures any silver which you send them in the post and see how much.
An obvious drawback to selling your silver at scrap value is that it takes no account of the scarcity of the piece. Your coins or jewellery may have a greater value than purely its scrap value.

Ebay:
Another way to sell your silver collectable's is to use an online auction such as Ebay. You may attract several prospective buyers and receive a better price than that of a scrap dealer. However condition of the item, collector demand and even how good your advertisement and photographs of the piece are will affect the price. To ensure you receive a fair price you may like to put a reserve on the item to ensure you're not giving it away.
